Since at least 1450, the word slut has been used, often pejoratively, to describe a sexually promiscuous woman. In and before the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, terms like "strumpet" and "whore" were used to describe women deemed promiscuous, as seen for example in John Webster's 1612 play The White Devil.

Souce: The good old Wikipedia, search: Promiscuity.

Usually used when derogatorily referring to females.

In some tribes of Sierra Leone, "A woman who is a Paramount Chief may have sexual intercourse with as many men as she pleases."

Being slutty is common in certain animal species; it's social acceptance varies from culture, geographical area to time period.

“Slut” is used to judge a women's value solely based on her sexual availability. To people who use that term, a woman is an object/toy and they don't want a used up old toy, they want a new one. So a woman who has been with a lot of men is seen to be worthless, regardless of whatever her personality/education level is.

Not only is “Slut” an insult, it's based on sexist ideas about what a woman’s role is. The idea stems from the olden days when a woman’s life would solely based on servitude to a man, with no rights to luxuries, happiness or enjoyment for herself and to have freedom of choice of who she would sleep with would be considered “dirty” or “wrong”.

Some insecure women also call other women “Sluts” to give the impression their value/worth is higher than the woman they are referring to.
Sometimes men feel a sense of entitlement to a beautiful girl and if they can’t have her, it hurts their ego and the reaction is similar to that of a small child. Name calling such as “Slut!” to win the approval of other men with a similar sexist attitude behind their normal everyday lives. They resent women’s rights. They don’t want women to be equal, they want preferential treatment and wish women were tools for them to use and keep shut in the kitchen and the bedroom, even if they don’t say it out loud.

A slut is a girl who sleeps with other guys, but won't have sex with you.
1. If a guy is pissed off that the attractive girl in high school won't even look at him, but has sex with other guys, he'll say "she is just a slut" to make himself feel less bad about missing out.

2. If a guy is dumped by a girl for another guy he'll call her a slut to make her feel bad, perpetuating the notion that she has betrayed an (imaginary) ongoing obligation towards him. This is an extension of an old warped idea that guys have rights of ownership over their girlfriends or wives.

A word made up by men to make the female gender feel more inferior. Mainly used when men are pissed because they don't "get some" or when another woman is jealous.
